Water & hydration, getting the facts

Updated: Mar 14, 2021

Much has been written about the benefits of drinking lemon water in the morning and other "good habits" such as drinking 8 glasses of water each day and drinking as soon as we wake up. There are many claimed benefits to our health, such as detoxification of the body, 'organ activation' and weight loss, among others.

It is important to understand the mechanisms that such habits use, so that adherence to them can lead to positive changes in the body.

Proper hydration of the body, and the avoidance of dehydration throughout the day is extremely important for organic and metabolic processes.

These processes help to maintain the beautiful appearance and texture of the skin, as well as to avoid cardiovascular, kidney, gastrointestinal and even mental issues.

So the reason why it's good to drink water as soon as we wake up is simply that a significant number of hours have gone into sleep, during which we did not get hydrated.

Water intake also activates our metabolism as the water heats up to reach body temperature. It has been calculated that by drinking 2 liters of water a day, we burn 95 calories to heat it from 22 to 37 degrees.

Also the water temperature for best hydration appears to be 16 degrees, and this seems to be true for 2 reasons: one reason being that higher or lower temperatures cause us to sweat more, and the second that 16 degrees seems to be the ideal temperature for greater water consumption.

The average recommended daily intake of fluids is 2.2 liters for women and 2.9 liters for men, with a sedentary lifestyle, though it depends on factors such as height, weight, activity level. At high temperatures and physical activity the recommendation can reach 4.5 liters, while it always depends on the individual.

At the same time, the intake of Vitamin C from squeezed lemon has antioxidant effects, which we want in our diet through many options in our day, to protect us from the negative effects of stressors, it is not though associated with fat burning.

So even better options are to eat a fruit or drink a smoothie with a glass of water, instead of drinking plain juice, to get more antioxidant vitamins and fibers, while hydrating our body.

Our goal for good health is to hydrate our body in the morning, and keep it hydrated throughout the day.
